Calculator Methodology

A focused guide to calculator methodology for planning your next yard project.

Calculation method

For a uniform layer, cubic yards = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. We convert to bags by multiplying cubic yards by 27 and dividing by the labeled cubic feet per bag, then rounding up. US tons require a supplier-specific pounds-per-cubic-yard value.

Pavers are counted from surface area divided by coverage per piece, with an editable cut allowance. Seed uses the entered pounds per 1,000 square feet. Fertilizer uses the target nutrient rate divided by the label percentage.

Paver base distinguishes compacted installed volume from loose delivered volume. The loose factor is an editable planning input, not a universal constant.

Limits

Geometry, soil, slope, weather, product size, compaction, and workmanship all affect real quantities. Each result should be checked against measured site conditions and the supplier quote.
