Overseeding A Lawn

Measure, price, and prepare the materials for overseeding a lawn.

Homeowner overseeding an existing patchy lawn, hands only
Illustrative project example

Diagnose why the lawn thinned and choose seed compatible with existing turf.

Measure the project

Measure only the areas to overseed, or use the full lawn area for a complete pass.

Estimate the main material

Material checklist

  • Grass seed
  • Aeration or surface-prep supplies
  • Topdressing if specified

Check quantities, specifications, and delivery with your supplier. This list is a planning prompt, not a construction design.

Quantities to price

  • Seed: use the overseeding rate printed for the chosen mix.
  • Topdressing: estimate only the planned thin layer if the site calls for one.
  • Area: exclude thick, healthy turf if you are treating patches.
Where the plan can change: Seed lying on a dense thatch layer has poor soil contact; plan surface preparation first.

Work sequence

  1. Mow and clear debris
  2. Improve seed-to-soil contact
  3. Spread seed evenly
  4. Manage moisture
