A 20 × 20 Patio: Turn The Plan Into A Comparable Quote

Break a 400-square-foot patio estimate into pavers, base, bedding, joints, edges, excavation and delivery before comparing bids.

By YardHatch · Published · Updated

A patio quote is comparable only when the site preparation, material specifications and included work match. Separate the surface from the supporting layers and ask what the quoted price excludes.

Use one drawing for every quote

A 20 × 20 ft rectangle is 400 sq ft with an 80 ft perimeter. Record doors, steps, slopes, drains and access on the same drawing. Subtract borders already restrained only when the chosen system permits it. Site design, soil and loading determine layer specifications.

Price each layer independently

The table is a quantity demonstration using assumed dimensions, not an installation specification. A 6 inch compacted base over 400 sq ft is 7.407 cubic yards before any loose conversion. A modeled 15% loose factor gives 8.519 loose yards. Verify the factor with the supplier and installer.

Keep cuts and packaging visible

For a nominal paver covering exactly 1 sq ft, 400 pieces cover the field; a modeled 10% cutting allowance gives 440 pieces. Actual paver dimensions, joints, pattern and pack coverage may change the count. Ask how partial pallets and breakage are handled.

Compare the scope, then the price

Require excavation, spoil removal, edge restraints, jointing material, drainage, delivery, labor, tax and site restoration to be itemized. Do not compare a DIY material subtotal with an installed price. Enter real dated bids into the cost worksheet; this article does not report local market prices.

Make it your own estimate

These are modeled calculations. Actual products, installation conditions and supplier requirements control your order.
